Product Description

Hastelloy B-2 N10665/2.4617/ NS3202 Plate/Strip/Bar/Rod/Forging Suitable For Acidic Environments In Heat Recovery Systems

Hastelloy B-2 (UNS N10665 / W.Nr. 2.4617 / NS3202) is a nickel-molybdenum alloy known for its excellent resistance to reducing environments such as hydrochloric, hydrobromic, and sulfuric acids. It has exceptional resistance to pitting, stress corrosion cracking, and knife-line attack, making it ideal for chemical processing industries. Available in plate, strip, bar, rod, and forging forms, Hastelloy B-2 maintains high strength and toughness across a wide temperature range. It is not recommended for oxidizing media but performs exceptionally in controlled environments. The alloy is easily fabricated and welded, though care must be taken during heat treatment. Typical applications include reactors, heat exchangers, and piping in aggressive chemical service.

Key Features:

1. Excellent Corrosion Resistance

  • Superior resistance to hydrochloric acid (HCl) at all concentrations and temperatures.
  • Outstanding resistance to sulfuric, acetic, formic, and phosphoric acids.
  • Effective against wet hydrogen chloride and acidic chloride environments.

2. Resistance to Stress Corrosion Cracking

  • Low carbon and silicon content helps minimize carbide precipitation during welding, reducing the risk of intergranular corrosion.
  • Excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting corrosion.

3. High Thermal Stability

  • Maintains strength and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures up to around 850°C (1560°F).

4. Good Fabricability

  • Can be hot and cold worked, machined, welded, and forged.
  • Commonly processed using standard methods, but must avoid excessive cold working to prevent work hardening.

5. Purity and Weld Integrity

  • Improved metallurgy over earlier Hastelloy grades: cleaner structure, improved thermal stability, and less susceptibility to fabrication-induced problems.

6. Typical Forms

  • Supplied as plates, strips, bars, rods, and forgings for flexibility across industrial applications.

General Characteristics

  • Excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and temperatures.
  • Resists pitting, stress corrosion cracking, and crevice corrosion.
  • Not suitable for oxidizing environments (e.g., nitric acid, ferric/ cupric salts).

Applications by Form

Plate & Strip

Used in large-area corrosion-resistant structures:

  • Reactor vessels and columns in chemical processing
  • Acid production equipment
  • Heat exchanger shells
  • Lining for tanks and containers transporting or storing strong acids

Bar & Rod

Commonly machined into components needing mechanical strength and corrosion resistance:

  • Pump shafts and impellers
  • Valve bodies and stems
  • Fasteners for corrosive service
  • Support pins and stirrers in acidic environments

Forgings

Ideal for custom-shaped, high-integrity parts:

  • Flanges, fittings, and pressure vessel parts
  • Custom components for reactors and acid handling systems
  • Hammered or pressed parts used in critical applications requiring good metallurgical properties

Industries That Use Hastelloy B-2

  • Chemical processing
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • Petrochemical plants
  • Pulp & paper industry (where bleaching uses strong acids)
  • Waste treatment systems handling strong reducing chemicals
